Abbreviated as REBT, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy is very similar to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in that it is a treatment that addresses the unhealthy thoughts clients allow in their heads. What sets REBT apart from CBT is that it addresses the philosophic basis of emotional disturbance, the secondary disturbances caused by unhealthy thought patterns and by promoting unconditional self-acceptance (USA).

Understanding the philosophic basis of our unhealthy thinking empowers clients to look at the underlying reasons they jump to conclusions. The unique aspects of REBT enable us to encourage our clients to become aware of secondary disturbances (secondary disturbances are the reactionary experiences caused by unhealthy thinking patterns). Depression, anxiety and panic attacks often times are directly linked to unhealthy thought patterns. For example, feeling embarrassed about appearing nervous is worrying about worrying, which has the root cause in negative mental chatter.

REBT presents a powerful tool for improving self-esteem. It teaches unconditional self-acceptance (USA), rather than any type of self-rating. Boosting clients' self-esteem by reinforcing some of their positive qualities is great, but risks self-esteem fluctuations when they do poorly. At R Rehab we understand that life has its ups and downs. Therefore, we utilize REBT to promote self-love regardless of circumstance. This triggers resilience!
